A special type 1 diabetes education program for young people between the ages of
8 and 16 and their parents, "Our Diabetes Journey – For Parents and Kids" focuses on how living
with diabetes can impact the entire family. Workshops are led by a young person
with diabetes and his or her parent, and cover topics relevant for families living
with type 1 diabetes. Pre-teens and teens who attend these programs are also able
to speak with others in their age group living with diabetes, while parents discuss
the challenges of helping their child successfully manage diabetes.
Other topics covered in this program include:
- Parent/youth communication and understanding one another's point of view
- The choices young people have in managing their diabetes
- Challenges that families face (e.g., the young person feels that his/her parent
is overprotective, parents struggle with letting their son or daughter be independent)
- Situations specific to teenagers (feeling different around other kids) and parents
(organizing the family's routine around a child's diabetes management)
- Resources and support for pre-teens and teens with diabetes
