Sometimes diet, exercise and oral diabetes medications may not be enough to control
blood sugar levels. Your doctor may recommend adding insulin to your treatment plan,
which can be an effective tool to help control blood sugar. This program is designed
to help people who either are reluctant to start insulin, are currently considering
insulin, or even someone who has just begun taking insulin. The session is led by
an adult with diabetes who has faced the decision about starting insulin and can
help participants view insulin in a different way — as a way to help control
blood sugar, rather than a sign of personal failure or a last resort.
Other topics covered in the session include:
- Why it is important to control blood sugar
- Background information about insulin
- Common myths about insulin (e.g., insulin is a sign of personal failure; insulin is a punishment; injections will be too painful; it will be too difficult to fit insulin into your routine)
- Taking insulin as part of an overall diabetes management plan
- Making choices that can help you reach your blood sugar goals
- The importance of communicating with your healthcare team
